Kesa Gatame for MMA - Scarf Hold

This is probably one of the strongest ground holds in Judo, and it easily translates to No Gi fighting.

Start with the standard Kesa Gatame ground hold (for the basics, see the video: Traditional Kesa Gatame - Scarf Hold).

Instead of using the judogi to grip at the collar, reach your right arm under his head, beyond his collar, and grasp your own right leg at the thigh just above the knee. Your left arm wraps around his right arm, at or above his elbow (closer to the shoulder), gripping strongly just above the elbow. This will give you a very tight control of his upper body without the need for a gi.

Your weight should be placed largely on his right-chest and ribs, your hips carried low to the ground (but not resting on the ground as it will remove weight from his chest - your hips should just fractionally off the ground, maybe enough to just slide a piece of paper under you, but no higher), your head held low, close to his, and your legs spread widely for good balance.

From Kesa Gatame, there are quite a few submissions available, and good potential for strikes as well. At the very least, it will keep you in a safe position and cause your opponent a fair amount of fatigue as he carries your weight on his ribs and chest and struggles to improve his position.
