Tai Otoshi for MMA - Body Drop

Tai Otoshi is a very effective throw, and can be made to work for no-gi fighting with a relatively simple grip change.

Begin by strongly gripping your opponent's right wrist. The hand, being larger than the wrist, provides a fairly good end-stop, preventing your grip from slipping. If fighting gloves are being worn, the grip is even more secure.

Step with your right leg, relatively shallowly (so that your body is not particularly tight to your opponent's), centered in between your opponents legs.

The next two movements happen simultaneously:

1. Trace a circle with your left foot, turning your back to the opponent and taking up a stance with your right leg in between your opponent's legs (it doesn't move from the previous step - it just rotates in-place) and your left leg outside of his legs.

2. Pull your opponent with your left had, already gripped at his wrist, and move your right arm across the front of his body, placing your right forearm into the crux of his right elbow and push.

Using the momentum of the spin created in step 1 above and the pull/push created in step 2, your opponent will be off-balanced to his right-front corner. At this point, stab your right leg across in front of him, blocking both his legs, continue the turning movement and pull/push of your arms, and execute the throw.

With Tai Otoshi, your opponent should be thrown over your blocking right leg (not your hip!) and land prone in front of you.

Once the throw is completed, you'll be on top, in control, and ready to begin the next phase of the fight.
